My background in the wine industry in NZ dates back to 1994. In that year, we acquired a 50 acre bare land rural block on the south bank of the Waipara River in North Canterbury. With the support and involvement of my wife Jennie, and our eldest son, Ben, we proceeded to develop the land as a new vineyard known as Fiddler’s Green. The vineyard, when fully planted, comprised 13.5ha ( 33 acres )in 5 grape varieties – Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Gewurztraminer.
The Fiddler’s Green brand has always had a top reputation for the quality of the wines produced over successive vintages since the first harvest in 1997. In June 2013, we sold the vineyard and business of Fiddler’s Green to another Waipara Valley wine producer, Dancing Water Ltd.

Glasnevin Wine Estates Ltd is a wine brand owned by Ben Johns. The company was registered in 2003. Ben is the sole shareholder and director of the company. I am the General Manager of the business. The impetus for establishing the Glasnevin brand was borne out of a recognition by Ben and myself of the outstanding quality of the fruit we were able to achieve off the Glasnevin soils,on which the Fiddler’s Green vineyard is planted. This soil classification is the predominant soil type on the south side of the Waipara River. The Glasnevin soils originate from ancient greywacke alluvium and tertiary sediments, including greensand. The soil imprints its own character on a wine’s flavour and structure. It is from these soils that we exclusively source our grapes from contracted growers. All our growers work with sustainable winegrowing certification ( SWNZ ). As the Glasnevin soils tend to be of relatively low vigour, crop levels can be readily controlled and managed. The expected yields, for all our varieties, is in the range of 5-6 tonnes per ha ( 2.0 – 2.5 kgs per vine ).

The Glasnevin winemaking philosophy reflects a gentle, natural influence; wines that speak of the natural environment from which the grapes are sourced. Glasnevin wines have an absolute focus on balance, elegance, and structure- are food friendly, and with the potential for ageing.
The intention, from the outset, has been to produce a ‘ limited release ‘ range of three aromatic white wines ( Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer ) and also a Pinot Noir, for the fine wine market. The brand has built a significant reputation for the quality and consistency of its range of wines since the debut Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris wines from the 2007 harvest, released to the market in 2008. Raymond Chan, noted wine writer and commentator, is on record as stating that ” Glasnevin wines are very impressive and deserving of following for future developments “.
